The Victorian Trailable Yacht division has adopted the "Class Based Trailable Yacht Rating" (CBTYR) system administered by Melbourne Trailable Yacht Club for the 2026-2027 Traveler Series.

Ratings (or Handicaps) have been a big discussion topic since 2020 when Australian Sailing ceased the Australian Yacht & Sports Boat Rule (ATYSBR) ratings and implementer a 'new' CBH rating system. After 6 years the new system has not proven itself to provide fair racing. Throughout this time the V-TYD had been recommending clubs continue to use the 'old' CBH ratings from 2019. 

V-TYD was always aware that this solution provided limitations as it was an epoch in time that was not able to be maintained moving forward. Creating a system that was both fair and future proof was imperative. In 2024 a proposal was developed by Greg Heins to harmonise the old ATYSBR ratings with the current "Ocean Racing Congress" (ORC) ratings. 

Over the past 2yrs Greg and Melbourne Trailable Yacht Club have taken this propsal forward and proven the concept to point where there is confidence it is feasible system. For season 2026-27 the system is ready for rollout.

• For season 2026-2027 the ATYSBR ratings will apply, even for classes of boats that have a valid ORC-club rating
• For season 2026-2027 OAK/Modified boats with an ATYSBR rating may continue to use this rating, but are encourage to obtain an ORC-club certificate. 
• New Classes, OAK and Modified boats without an ATYSBR rating must obtain an ORC-club certificate (many already have this)
  • Note this is a one-off under CBTYR, ongoing certificate renewal is not required
